Growing Ivy?

Ive ALWAYS had a green thumb "problem".. LOL

Someone gave me an ivy plant back in October and it was beautiful...it was growing..looking good and green..

then I went away for 2 weeks and my boyfriend didnt take care of it properly.

So When I got back, I tried to nurse it and cut the dead leaves off..

That was 3 months ago...

It just seems like its not growing much. Do I keep it in the window? Or should I keep it in a regularly lit room?

Change the pot its in?

And how much do I have to water it? I have hard water and it sometimes leaves spots on the ivy leaves.

Any suggestions how I can make it grow and strive?

Growing Ivy?
Sounds like you have a root rot problem. My guess is your bf didn't water the plant and by the time he/you did water it it was too late. Most of the roots had died. Watering just makes it worse because now there is so much soil and so little roots. You can do one of two things (or both if you like). You can cut the remaining live branches off and stick them in a jar of water to root. Ivy's a extremely easy to root in water. Just place the jar in a window sill and in a few weeks you'll start to see the roots growing in the water. Be sure to trim the leaves on the bottom of the branches. You don't want the leaves in the water, this will cause rot and could possibly kill it. The other thing you can do is to just start all over. What I mean is to take the remaining plant and get off as much soil off the roots as possible. You can run it under luke warm water to get left over soil off. Then take fresh potting soil , and a new pot. Be sure both are new because you don't want to transmit any other diseases to the plant. Plant it in a smaller pot than what it originally came in ( general rule about an inch around the diameter of the plant). I would wait a few days and then water it. You should start to see new growth in about a month or so. If the plant gets worse, then it might be to late. Luckily Ivy's' are pretty inexpensive. Hope this helps! :)
Reply:I don't know where your from as far as country or state! But if you have a plant nursery you can go to, buy some Miracle grow, and mix it good into the soil of the plant, but don't damage any roots!

There is also miracle grow sticks that you can put into the soil too! Try to not use liquid fertilizers, they don't work that well on house plants and are toxic to pets anyways! If after using the miracle grow and the plants start doing good again, it would be wise to move the whole plant and soil to a bigger plant pot! But don't distrub the soil from the old plant pot, just let it dry out some, before tranfer so it doesn't break up and apart during the moving process to the bigger plant pot!

Many plants will die off quickly one they get root bound, when the plant pot is to small for the plant to keep on growing bigger! Normally you can tell though, when the plant produces, smaller and smaller leaves then what it suppose too! The leaves never grow full size!
Reply:make sure you don't over water it .stick your finger in the soil about 1/2 inch if the soil is moist don't water it even if it is dry on top keep it in a sunny window or near one.and it should start growing agin give it some fertilizer see if you can get the kind with the fish oil in it that is the best kind to buy you can get it at the hardware store the fertilizer.good luck.after you give your plant the fertilizer watch it will start to grow from there.
Reply:it sound like your soil might be a problem... you can take a cutting of it and put it in a vase with water- make sure to keep water in it at all times.. it should then root in the water. once the roots are strong and big-you can plant it in fresh-new soil. that way you can keep your ivy and get it healthy enough for planting again.
