Poison Ivy Help?

I have poison ivy all over my legs. It's getting annoying and now starting to sprout in other places. Im using some anti itch poison ivy cream and I used something to get the oil off. Any ideas on things to do to lessen the duration or things to avoid that may prolong the duration? Any ways to get through the day? How long should this last? Is there any reason to consult a dr?

Poison Ivy Help?
Poison ivy is miserable.

Take an antihistime orally (Benedryl)

Try very hot water as a sitz bath. Heat causes the skin

to release histimines and will tame the itch. Yes, it does help.

Calamine is an old standby, but personally, I prefer Rhuligel is one of the best. Or try a cream with an antihistime in it.

Don't rip open the blisters unless you want to risk potential scarring. You can also 'slap' the area when the urge to scratch is too great.

Combine oral antihistime with topical and wait it out. 7-10 days. Sorry there isn't a better or quicker solution.

Also, learn to recognize the plant. Even dormant plants can cause a reaction, as can getting in the smoke of burned vines.
Reply:It hurts, but scratch it, break it open, and pour bleach on it. It will be gone in about a day and a hlaf, but i warn you, it hurts!
Reply:Try Calamine Lotion...
Reply:I recently looked into this when I discovered a large PI vine growing up one of my Pinetrees.

A blowdryer on high heat setting blown back and forth over the rash will actually stop some of the itch. I also found this home remedy that quite a few people claim really works. ...

Arid Extra Dry

Having had a spouse who would break out in a rash at the sight of poison ivy/oak, I came across a small notation in the back of a chemistry magazine on "home remedies that worked." This one was a gem and was very inexpensive.

At the first sign of irritation caused by poison ivy/oak, wash the area with soap and water if possible, but in any case, spray (never use a stick or roll-on) the area with an antiperspirant containing aluminum chlorhydrate. Arrid Extra Dry was a favorite, but any kind that is not too sticky will work. Simple deodorants won't work; it must be an antiperspirant! This material reacts with the urushiol, the principal irritant in poison ivy/oak, and deactivates it. It will even provide relief and start healing when oozing blisters are present. My sons never went camping without it.

I hope you feel better soon.
Reply:My sister once had poison ivy real bad, she had to go to the dr. to get a cortisone shot, which helped. On the other hand, when my dad got it, he poured bleach on it. I don't think I would recommend that, but he said it worked best to dry it up,lol. I think it would burn.
Reply:Ugh. I hate poison ivy. I get it really bad. But don't worry I get through it.

- First, try not to itch. I know that seems impossible to do, but it will help from spreading, which will mean it lasts longer, and you have more to worry about!

- If you are itching it, wash your hands FREQUENTLY. Try not to touch your face. I got it there once, and boy that was not fun, especially since it was on my eyelid :(

- I find that this product called Ivy-Dry works great. You spray it on, so you don't have to touch it, and spread it around. Sure it smells wicked bad, but it relieves the itch, and treats the rash. It works for me every time.

- Try to stay out of the sun and/or heat. I find that it sometimes triggers an 'itch attack'.

- If it does get worse after trying these things (or spreads close to eyes), I would go to the doctor. He/She can prescribe you a steroid that will take care of it. I had to do that when I had it on my face.

- Lastly, the rash should only last a week or so. Then again it depends on the way you treat it, scratch it etc.

I hope this helps and you get better!
Reply:Make a solution of one cup bleach to 3 cups water. Pat that on the poison ivy 3-4 times a day. Sounds weird but it works!! When I know I have been in (or near!) poison ivy I do the bleach business after I shower and I don't usually break out. My sympathy - poison ivy is the pits!
Reply:to dry the oozing and weeping ... use calamine lotion. you could probably find it somewhere like a grocery store. it relieves ivy, oak, sumac, and POISON IVY. the directions are to shake well befire using. Applying liberallyas often as neccisary. good luck and try to stay away from it again :)
