Poison ivy killer?

I have poison ivy growing up one of my trees. Does anybody know how to kill the poison ivy and not the tree?

Poison ivy killer?
I've had great luck using Roundup in a very limited and controlled way, which I'll describe, but it does involve handling the plant that is to be killed. Never tried it with poison ivy, but I would if I had to. For poison ivy, I'd cover my arms with plastic bags (attach with tape so they're snug) and I'd wear rubber gloves which I'd discard immediately afterwards.

Here's what to do: select a strong branch or stem of the poison ivy. Cut off growing tip if necessary. (Perhaps just break it off so as not to contaminate any scissors.) Have the Roundup ready in a yoghurt container or small can, you only need about 1 inch of the liquid in bottom of this container. Dip the top 5 or 6 inches of the plant stem into the Roundup. Swish, make sure all leaves get soaked, let excess drip into container. Then wrap this stub loosely in a small plastic bag and secure it with elastic band.

That's all. Leave the thing alone for days, even weeks. The plastic bag wrapping will prevent the Roundup from dripping onto nearby valuable vegetation or from getting washed off by rain.

Rather slowly, the Roundup will kill the plant. First the stem you've treated, and eventually the entire plant. It may take a few weeks.

The beauty of this method is that it uses so little Roundup, and all nearby vegetation is protected.

Of course, immediately after you've carried out the procedure you'd carefully discard the rubber gloves, the plastic bags that were protecting your arms from the poison ivy, any leftover Roundup and the small container itself.

Wishing you really good luck here!

ps another approach might be to cut the poison ivy stem - all of the stems - near the base of the tree. The growth above the cut will obviously die on its own. You'd apply the Roundup-plastic bag treatment to one of the short remaining stems coming from the roots of the poison ivy. It might be easier to work this way as the poison ivy you'd be handling would be low to the ground.
Reply:Use a selective broadleaf weed killer called "Triple Threat"

Poison Ivy is a broadleaf weed.

If you are worried about the trees then paint on the herbicide with a brush onto the poison ivy leaves that will localize the application.

Reply:use a spray specific for poison ivy. I recommend blackberry and poison ivy killer (I think by Lilly-Miller). You can spray this on the foliage of the poison ivy and not hurt the tree. Or, cut the ivy back and then spray. You may have to repeat a few times, as you know poison ivy is persistent.
