Herpes or poison ivy?

I went hiking in the woods the other day and like an idiot, wore shorts. 2 days later, I developed a cluster of oozing blisters on one finger and the next day, got another cluster right by my mouth.

Both clusters just popped up all of a sudden and first there was this sort of tingling feeling, then a numbness. I thought for sure it was poison ivy, only it doesn't ITCH like poison ivy (I had it once when I was a kid, it doesn't feel nor even look the same.) Isn't poison ivy a rash? This is not a rash. There are no other clusters anywhere else on my body. My boyfriend got a cluster on his finger the same time I got one on mine. I have never in my life been exposed to herpes or had the infection. I have never had a cold sore either. I know my boyfriend was exposed to it twice, before we met, but he says he never got it. Now I'm not so sure and am really worried. How to tell the difference? I have looked online and both are very much alike.

Herpes or poison ivy?
Without seeing the lesions it is hard to say. Your doctor is the only one qualified to tell you so keep that appointment.

Whether it is poison ivy, herpes virus, or other skin condition such as scabies or ring worm it can be transferred by touch, if they are oozing. If they are that close to your eye you MUST be very carefull. If it is herpes and your eyes become infected you could lose your sight. I know that is scary but you need to know this. I'm sure any other condition would also compromise your eyes. A suggestion, call your doctor back and request that he or his nurse return your call. They may want to work you in today.

About herpes, that little devil is sneaky and mean. Yes your boyfriend could have contracted this virus without knowing it. In fact most men do not have as serious a breakout as most women (that just sucks doesn't it! LOL). Also herpes can be spread even when no lesions are visible so this may very well be that. Herpes can be controlled so much better now than when it first became epidemic. There are several anti-virus drugs on the market. Oh, by the way, poison ivy can also ooze and be spread by contact with the fluid. Either way your doctor will tell you. One thing about herpes is that it is very painful. I don't know if you're having pain or not but that is a telling symptom. Don't rely on this though, everyone is different and experiences different problems.

I wish you the very very best and will pray that this will go away and you will not have to face another possible breakout.

Oh yeah! DON'T be embarressed to tell your doctor about your boyfriends exposure and by association your possible exposure. It IS true that when you have sex with someone you are having sex with whomever they have had sex with.

Best of luck
Reply:You need to get to a doctor to be absolutely sure.
Reply:Any time one goes hiking into the woods one takes the chance of being exposed to many plants and insects which may cause odd skin ailments (ie; rashes, irritants, swelling, sores , itching hives, etc...). I suggest you seek a doctor's opinion about what you may have become allergic too. I feel it is nothing serious, but any time you have a facial irritant, get it checked out before it may spread.
Reply:see a doctor on this matter. better safe than sorry in my opion?
Reply:Herpes simplex type 1, but you have not mentioned any prodomal sign and symptoms, as you do not have any previous history of same lesions in my opinion possibility of irritant dermatitis is also present in your case.

dermatologist can diagnosed clinically. details written by you are not sufficient to make absolute confirm diagnosis.
Reply:Poison Ivy does not affect the palm side of the hand - so if depends on where on the finger the rash is. The tingling and numbness are a lot more suggestive of Herpes than Ivy.
Reply:I think poison ivy (contact irritant dermatitis).... But a doc would be the best person to judge. Normally herpes simplex would not occur on 2 different locations at the same time.......It can occur but very rarely.

About HSV1 and 2.. the change from HSV2 to HSV1 cannot occur as they are different viruses and they dont interchange like that. It could be possible that a person has both the viruses but transmits only one.

Do let us know what the doc said and ask him why not the other. Other piece of advice is if your boyfriend has HSV 1or 2 get yourself tested too to be on the safer side.

All the best.
Reply:Call your dr and tell hem its spreading to your eye....ask if they could work you in today. If not go to the ER.
