Help with Poison Ivy!?

Well, it started out as a very small itch on my arm. Then the next day my chin started itching. The next day it was all over my face, on my arms, and on my side. We went to the doctor the day after that because my eye was almost swollen shut. They gave me some Prednisone, but it doesn't seem to work that well, but it made the swelling go down. Oddly, I haven't got any blisters, but I have red splotches all over my face...


After we went to the hospital and found out they didn't know what it was, when I got home I realised that my dog must have given me poison ivy. She runs through weeds and the woods almost everyday, and then she lays on me. I need some help, does anyone know a way to make the red splotches go away faster?


My itching has stopped a lot since I put hot water on my face, but when I put ice cubes on it tiny bumps popped up all over. Anyone know why? Also, is the poison ivy still contagious?

Don't touch it. You may be spreading it by touching and scratching. Cover it with Caladryl or Benadryl topical. There is a clear gel you can get at the drugstore and I think it's called Caladryl.





Be very careful with the medicine you take for it, even the topical meds that you put on your skin. Follow the directions very carefully and don't use Benadryl pills and the cream at the same time. This combo could make you very sick.
Reply:Yes, poison ivy is contagious, if other people in your house are allergic. You must be very careful with hand towel sharing, touching, etc. A steroid shot would work faster than prednisone pills. At least, that is what is sounds like you have is pills. Other than that, apply rubbing alcohol to dry out the spots and apply benadryl cream to help with itching, swelling, and redness.
Reply:Stay on the Prednisone, go to the doctor he'll give you a steroid to boost your immune system, and try swimming in a pool with chlorine (it helps dry it out)





It can still spread on your body, but only be given to someone else via touching the actual oils from when you got the poison
Reply:The liquid from poison ivy is contagious. You must first wash rash with soap and water to get rid of urushiol to prevent rash, then apply alcohol to dry it up. You can use Calamine lotion or witch hazel to stop itch.

Well basically like they say , time is the best medicine.


But in the mean time go to your local drug store and get Calagel.





Its really good stuff and you can feel it cooling.





And it about 1 or 2 weeks it will be gone =]

Reply:I have never gotten it but my old roomate used to get it really really bad. I used calamine lotion and took epsom salt bathes...other than that he pretty much layed on the ground practially naked and had a fan running on him...

Reply:The product is called Dr West's Poison Ivy Skin Cleanser. Yesterday I was wood cutting and forgot about some poison ivy on my left side of where I was cutting. When I awoke this am I knew immediatly why a hand sized spot on my left fore arm was inflamed and itching like mad. I had bought some of Dr Wests product about 2 years ago and it seemed to work then on smaller instances of poison ivy. I was not sure about the shelf life so now was the real challenge. So, I treated the large area on my arm about 10 times within 45 minutes this morning. As I write this the poison ivy is almost totally gone except for a little redness. IT TOTALLY WORKS! I find it amazing how cures to things come along and unless they are 'blessed' by the medical community they do not see the light of day.

Reply:If it is in fact poison ivy reaction, it is not contagious. You get the reaction after contact with the oils on the plant. It can and will spread on your body once the reaction is present, but touching someone else after the oils have already been removed will only gross them out. They will not get the rash unless they come into contact with the plant oils themselves. Now if you touch the plant then touch another person, you may pass the oils on. But after you wash your hands, bathe, shower etc you will not have the oils on you. If you feel you have been in contact with the oils, immediatly wash with warm soap and water to remove the oils before you develope a rash.





My husband need a shot of a medical steriod and took some medications perscribed. It took a few months to get him normal again because the rash was extremely progressed and "all over".
