Ivy League or Small Scale?

Is an Ivy League school attendance really worth it? Or would it be more beneficial to attend a smaller scale university/college?

Ivy League or Small Scale?
through a smaller scale school its easier to get into law or medical school but ultimalty it really makes no difference as long as you dont go to some school nobodys ever heard of. you should go where you are most comfortable going
Reply:Ivy League is always worth it not only for the education you will receive but the benefit of peer and alumni networking. After you graduate, where you start depends largely on who you know. You can see how the benefits extend not just on your first job but where you go with your career.
Reply:It really does depend on what you'd like to take away from the college experience. Of course the Ivy league does afford one the ability to make strong ties and good contacts for later life but I'm still not sure wether the quality of education is that much better than a respected public school such as UC Berkely or smaller liberal arts colleges. There are a new type of universities in America which newsweek describes as the new Ivies; depending what you want to do you may want to check them out.

Heres the link:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14325172/. Sure the Ivies are great schools but alot of cutting edge stuff is coming out of the UC''s and universities like UNC -Chapel Hill, Carnegie Mellon, UV, NYU, UW-Madison....the list goes on! I suppose it comes down to this country having many great colleges and they are most certainly not limited to the Ivies.
Reply:I would attend a very good smaller private school. Look for one that is ranked very well in your field. Ivy leagues are great for grad school, but for undergrad individual attention is key.
Reply:It depends on what you want to do career wise and what your projected major is. There is no point in going to an Ivy League school if you don't have the financial resources. Keep in mind that some of the top schools in certain fields are not Ivy League schools.
Reply:On one hand, there's a lot of IMMEDIATE prestige and status given to an individual who graduates from an Ivy League school. And the Ivy League alumni network will work for you when you're looking for a job.

There will be less pressure and less stress on you to do well at a smaller university/college. And I understand that the social life at Ivy League schools is somewhat "stratified" by class distinctions while at smaller universities/colleges you would be able to "re-invent" yourself during the time you attend.

My personal belief is that the quality of a person's education depends more on the individual than it does on the school. It may take a lot more individual effort (read "work" here) at a "smaller" school but, in the long run, you will feel like you have accomplished more ON YOUR OWN. And I think that ultimately, you'd personally be a great deal happier at a smaller school than at an Ivy League school.
