to get in a ivy league school do you have to have more than a 3.6. because i have one and i really want to go to one. this is my freshman 1st semester grade.
Ivy league?
Why? Why do you want to go to an Ivy League school?
This is not a rhetorical question. The Ivies are very competitive, certainly. The PPs are correct that it will take more than high grades to get into one. It does always pass belief to me that so many people seem so anxious to get into an Ivy League college--ANY Ivy League college--and that's it.
That is not going to be interesting to an Ivy League school. What is it that you think you can bring to one of these schools that's special? What is that you think you can get there that isn't going to be the same anywhere else? WHICH Ivy League school? The same person who's interested in Yale is probably not going to feel exactly the same way about Dartmouth, and vice versa. Where is it that you want to go? If you love big cities, you might adore Harvard. But then, what's wrong with MIT? Just not an Ivy? If you want to be an engineer, is that going to stop you?
Start by answering those questions, and then you can start working toward whichever school it is that you think you want. If you want to be competitive in that market, you are going to have to make yourself stand out. If all those schools wanted were 4.0s and perfect scores on the SATs, they could fill their classes that way. But they don't--they want interesting students who have a variety of experiences and talents and a clear idea of what it is that they want to do.
You're a freshman, so you have a way to go yet. Keep getting good grades, work on developing your interests, and when it's time for college, look for the one that will best serve you at that time. If that's an Ivy League school, well and good. But there are a lot of fantastic schools out there, and no one ever sat around crying in their beer over going to a non-Ivy League school if it was one that they loved.
Reply:You won't get into one without a high GPA (over 3.5, most likely), but that alone won't guarantee your admission. You're going to have to have good test scores, extraciriculars, and find some way to stand out.
Reply:If you have aspirations in this area, I suggest you read the book "A Is For Admission" ... a very enlightening book re: Ivy League (and other highly competitive schools) admissions.
Reply:Well, that's a B+ or A- average. You can get in, but a large majority of anyone who applies there has a 4.0. Also, places like that have less than a 20% acceptance rate. If you REALLY want to go to an Ivy League school, don't just worry about grades. Do volunteer work at churches and hospitals. Join a lot of clubs. Maybe play an instrument or two. Even if you don't get accepted, there's still many good schools out there. Good luck, and you have a good GPA, by the way. ;-)
