Ivy League Dreams!!?

What do i need to have on my transcript to be accepted into an ivy league university such as princeton, cornell, and brown? SAT scores, act scores, GPA, extra currics, comm. service and wat else? what other things can i do to stand out? do they like people with an ability to write well?

Ivy League Dreams!!?
The basics for getting into any college with a low acceptance rate:

-Take the most challenging courses your school offers. It's OK not to take AP or honors classes if your school does not offer them, but if your school offers 30 APs, you'd better have taken quite a few. Try to take a variety of courses, including sciences with lab, a foreign language, and the basic English, math, history, etc.

-If you take an AP class, take the test. This shows the college that you didn't just take the class for a GPA boost, and will sometimes get you college credit.

-GPA- obviously, you want the best grades possible, but class rank is sometimes more important. If you've got a 4.5 weighted GPA and are 2nd out of 400, that's better than a 4.9 GPA ranked15th out of 100. Schools look more at class rank because it shows how well you made use of your school's resources.

-SAT and ACT scores- I believe all the ivies take either, as long as it's ACT with writing. Prepare for these tests as much as possible, but don't stress out too much- it's only one part of you application. Colleges tend to weigh the SAT writing section less than the other sections, but they do consider it.

-SAT IIs- most Ivies require that you take 2 or 3 SAT IIs in addition to the SAT. Try to take them in different areas (don't take math 1 and 2 for example) and get a book with a practice test for each subject to decide which ones to take.

-Community service- if you've got it, awesome. I managed to get into Brown with only 75 service hours, but I may be an exception. Try to stick to one or two activities- colleges would prefer quality of experience over number of hours.

-Extracurriculars- don't give them a list of every activity you've done since preschool. I kept track of all the competitions, clubs and activities I participated in in a file on my computer, and when application time rolled around, I figured out the main categories of activities, and organized them like that- this shows that you have specific areas of interest and that you're not just joining random clubs. On your app, make sure to include any officer positions and if possible, a short description of what you did in the club.

-If there's something that makes you stand out, that's great. If you play a sport or an instrument, let them know! You can sometimes send in an art portfolio, acting tape, or instrument or voice recording. If you write well, then let the college know about any competitions you may have won, honors received, etc.

Two important things to remember:

-there are no absolute guarantees, especially for colleges like Brown, which prides itself on evaluating applicants holistically- that is, they look at the whole application to see if you, as a person, fit the school

-on the other hand, getting into an ivy league or similar school is not impossible! Hey- they've got to accept some people!

Good luck on your apps, and make sure to look at non-ivy schools- there are a ton of top tier universities and liberal art colleges that you may not have heard about!
