I need help in dealing with extra coculicular activities in order to prepare myself for getting admitted into an Ivy League School. My only problem is that I suck at sports ,which is a big factor for admissions. Could I be able to overcome this setback with other stuff - volunteering or extra languages(I'm learning my 4th)?
Ivy League Help?
Sports are not required to get into an Ivy. You need to have good extracurriculars, and varsity sports can be very good--but so can community service, and any other extracurriculars (student government, band, etc.) as long as you show commitment to them over a long period of time, and preferably take some leadership roles.
So, not playing sports is not a setback. Varsity sports can be a bonus because the Ivies do recruit athletes for their teams, but there are only X number of spots on Harvard's football team, you know? So sports are not that big a factor. Other extracurriculars are just as good.
So don't worry, you'll be fine doing other extracurriculars.
But, I have to say that, instead of learning a 4th language, maybe you should work on perfecting your English, since the essay (and SAT verbal/writing) is also a very important part of your application.
And yes, one of the reasons the Ivies are famous is because they are rich schools, with a lot of money available to give away to students who are academically qualified but need financial aid.
Reply:If you don't like sports, don't do them. It isn't WHICH extra curriculars you do, or even, necessarily, how many. It's the QUALITY with which you do them. So whatever activities you like best, do.
And try to take on some extra responsibility in at least one of them - run their fundraiser, or one of their events. Do all their promotions. Whatever activities you do, do them well, and with some depth, and you won't need the sports.
And to Quiet Girl, the other poster - don't worry so much abou the cost. If you have the grades, apply, even if the school is expensive. Some of the most elite schools, such as Harvard, also have the most generous financial aid packages. In fact, Harvard's is quite remarkable. So while you do want to have a couple of less expensive options on your list, don't NOT apply to the Ivys because they are expensive. You never know what aid they'll throw your way.
Reply:Ivy schools are great and sports are good too but if you can't play any then that's fine but i suggest that you do one anyway. I really want to get into an Ivy school too but i don't think that i can afourd it though my grades are close to perfect. I played tennis in the fall and i'm not that great....anyways the point is GO FOR IT and goin a sport
